A Message about the Capitol Unrest

Dear Long Beach Unified Families,

We know that many students and parents are now processing the situation in Washington, D.C. after yesterday’s terrible unrest at the Capitol Building. We also recognize that this week’s national political crisis is yet “one more thing” to process after months of trying times.

Last evening, we shared classroom resources for teachers to use as they both model and encourage civil discourse. In addition, we continue to provide social-emotional support that is accessible through teachers, counselors and administrators. Our Family Resource Centers remain accessible via our website at ngskmc-eis.net. Remember that our school offices can be reached by phone and email, and you are always encouraged to reach out if your child needs support.

More than any institution, our public schools cultivate a diverse democracy. We teach students to think critically about voting and elections, and in the face of political polarization, we give students opportunities to practice how to engage with people and ideas across their differences. These are the social-emotional and life skills that we want to instill in every Long Beach Unified student. As shocking as yesterday’s events may seem, they also present opportunities for discussion about civility, equal rights, safety and civic action for social change.

Our team of dedicated educators and support staff remain devoted to the well-being of our students.

With appreciation for your support,

Jill
